Guided by the client’s desire for harmony, balance, and a calm environment, Pennell House is a complete reimagining of a classic beachside bungalow. The original 1,423 SF residence was transformed into a 2,350 SF home designed to help the family downsize, simplify, and spend more time together.

Built within the original footprint, the new design creates a bright, airy open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space that connects the front of the home to the backyard. Numerous skylights, tall windows, wall cutouts, sliding patio doors, and even half-wall showers invite natural light deep into the home, creating a sense of flow and openness throughout.

The kitchen—tucked neatly behind a clean feature wall—serves as the heart of the home, with utilitarian elements carefully concealed to maintain a minimalist aesthetic. Scandinavian white oak flooring and a custom dining bench built into a floor-to-ceiling cedar feature wall bring warmth and texture to the main living space. The cedar continues on the kitchen island and into the master bedroom, where it lines the closet wall for visual continuity.

The front facade features an ocean-view deck and a series of simple, elongated roof planes, tying the home together with understated elegance and a quiet connection to its coastal surroundings.
