obrARCHITECTURE was commissioned to design a remodel and addition to the Parberry Residence in 2008. The existing house was remodeled to reconfigure the locations of the living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor while updating the look of the house. A new garage with an artist’s studio on the second floor was designed on the street side of the site. The clients, a retired farmer and a watercolor artist, brought often divergent views to the project that lead to a dynamic play of materials and pathways throughout the project. The farmer is represented in the natural wood and the heavy solid grounding materials and colors, whereas the artist is represented in the clean lines, steel, glass and white stucco. Each of the owners has their own “walks” through the house, studio/garage and site that lead to their personal interests, but the walks cross in the garden where the clients come together in their love for the beauty of the garden.
